Do you wonder how government can stop internet at certain places

We all know that Internet is the lifeline of modern world.

It is mostly used for communication through chat, posts, messages etc. This also helps modern day protesters to widespread there voices.

If we talk in context of India,so Jammu & Kashmir ,Uttar pradesh,Assam are some states where people experience internet shutdown. These shutdowns takes place to maintain peace in affected areas so that rumours, violent content may not spread.

Which means you can use calling ,messaging but not the services which require internet like Whatsapp,Twitter,Facebook etc.According to a report published in 2018 in past 7 years India experienced 233 times Internet shutdown.

India tops the list of most number of internet shutdowns in world.

You must be wondering how these shutdowns takes place.

There are three categories of Internet channels. One is prepaid mobile internet service, other is postpaid, and the next one is broadband and leased lines. Most of the people in Kashmir use prepaid internet services.” The prepaid mobile networks mostly provided in Kashmir by private operators like Airtel, are usually the first to go in any conflict

Whenever anything happens, there’s any extraordinary situation, the first casualty is internet. Mostly prepaid mobile services are shut — except BSNL . BSNL is also shut down, but at the last stage. Broadband works mostly, they just reduce speed or briefly shut it down. Government use leased lines provided to offices, army uses a separate network which isn’t linked to private networks.

The government doesn't have their own routers and switches that they can just "power off" to halt the Internet. Sure, they have their own infrastructure, but that's not going to kill the Internet.
The Internet in the India is huge and much bigger than many other countries. This includes the amount of data as well as the number of companies (ISPs) involved.
The government could phone up all of these ISPs and potentially demand them to null route traffic or otherwise somehow cease traffic for their customers. But this would be very difficult if not impossible to "shut down" the Internet. Indian law probably wouldn't allow for such an authoritarian shutdown. The Internet doesn't have a "kill switch".
State government very likely and very probably called up individual ISPs and ordered them to halt traffic.
